Flyers with QR codes 'need to become more mainstream'

There needs to be greater awareness of QR codes for them to grow in success.

Quick response (QR) codes could increase the effectiveness of flyers, it has been suggested, after one expert stated the symbols work better in print.

Editor of What Mobile Jonathan Morris said the codes - which can be scanned by a smartphone to take an individual to a company website - are being used more frequently by organisations.

But while awareness is being raised among the public, QR codes still need to become fully mainstream in order to be a true success, as they have been inserted into the end of adverts without an explanation of what they are in many cases, he continued.

Mr Morris stated the codes have "limitless" possibilities and are useful "because it's easier to take a picture and scan it than to write down or try to remember an URL".

According to a recent study by comScore, smartphone adoption in the EU5 - the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy - has grown by 41 per cent in the past year to 60.8 million users.
